How to Display Rocks and Minerals

If you are a rock and mineral enthusiast you may find yourself wanting to show off your collection.  You may also wish to put those rocks and minerals within sight, so you can enjoy them often. 

Displaying rocks and minerals can be done in several ways.  In this article I want to go over some ways to display your rock and mineral collection.

1. Rock and Mineral Display Shelves

A good rock and mineral display shelf is a great way to display your rocks and minerals.  These display shelves are also helpful when trying to keep your favorite rocks and minerals out of reach from children.   These shelves can be an easy DIY project for someone wanting to put in the effort.

However, some of you might just want a nice rock and mineral display shelf you can buy. .

This display shelf is not one that I created but one that can both sit on a dresser or even be mounted to a wall. I like the mirror background and I had to mention it here as it is one that I want. I might even try to duplicate it in similar in a DIY type project.

2. Rock and Mineral Boxes

Rock and mineral boxes can be a great way to not only display your collections, but also move your collection around. These types of rock and mineral display medium make it easy for kids to move their collections around (tip over and carry). They are a great way to compartmentalize any favorite rocks for easy viewing.

This display box is perfect for kids to put on a dresser. They mention that it can also be mounted as well and it looks very customizable. As a wood worker, I plan on doing a simple design of my own after this manner.

3. Rock and Mineral Display Jars

Rock and mineral display jars are a popular way to display your rocks and mineral. If you have a lot of rocks and just can’t really find a means to display them all, a rock and mineral display jar may be your answer.

Jars are relatively inexpensive to buy, but as they come in glass, you will still want to keep these out of the reach of small children. Keep in mind dropping rocks into glass jars can also result in breaking the jar.

When displaying rocks and minerals in a jar you will want to consider the size of the jar and the size of your rocks. If your rocks are small and your jar is huge, you will obviously not see the rocks sitting in the middle of the jar. This is really the main consideration when displaying rocks in jars.

Also keep in mind that rocks or minerals, depending on their abrasive surface, can scratch up jars. Jars made of plastic materials are definitely more susceptible to this damage.

Mason jars are a great way to display your rocks and minerals. Hey, the even come with a lid. Make sure when you are buying mason jars, you find some without lettering on the glass. The lettering just does not help when viewing into the jars.

These “spaghetti” jars are not too bad as a display for rocks and minerals. They are similar to the one featured above with the marbles and other rocks in it. This set has a variety of different sizes and will display your collection nicely.

4. Rock and Mineral Display Stands

Display stands for rocks and minerals are a great way to display one really nice specimen. The put the rock or mineral on its own and make it the only focal point in a surrounding area.

Single display stands are a great way to display that nice rock or mineral specimen you love. The only catch to this is that typically the display is difficult to match to your rock or mineral when purchasing.

Another item of interest when choosing a display stand for your rock or mineral will be how the stand looks. Many like a very ornate and beautiful stand to display their prized rock or mineral. In many cases it needs to be very stable as that rock or mineral will likely be very expensive.

At this time I do not have any recommended stands for someone who wants a rock or mineral display stand. I do plan on making one, hopefully in the future, out of wood and doing some scroll saw work on it.

5. Rock and Mineral Display Bowls and Dishes

Rock and mineral display bowls or dishes are nothing really to markedly different than any other bowl or dish. A bowl or a dish is a popular way to display some of your favorite rocks or minerals and you don’t need anything too specific.

When it comes to this type of display, you may want to consider if the rocks or minerals might damage your bowl or dish. Chances are you might not be to particular about this and the size of the bowl or dish will be your main thought.

Currently I do not have any recommendations for a bowl or a dish and chances are you might have better ideas than myself on this display medium. If I build or run into any absolutely great finds on this display medium, I’ll let you know.

There are many different ways to display your rocks and minerals. I have gone over my top 5 favorite ways to display my rocks and minerals.

If you are a DYI type of person then you might be able to create some of your own rock and mineral displays. For many of us though, we are lucky we can find just about anything online to purchase. I hope I have helped in giving you at least one or two ideas in helping you display your rocks and minerals.
